I believe the mix series is something we are slowly losing touch with in dance music. i grew up on various mix series (trushmix, blowing up the workshop, essential mix, resident advisor, truants… the list goes on) - listening to them to feel inspired or to get excited to go out or commute to work or workout etc. they played a fundamental role for me in learning about music and DJs (and still do!), and that felt super important while I grew up in Canada and felt at a distance from some of my favourie DJs that might never tour where I lived. i’ve watched many more mix series come and (sadly) go, and while there are many that still exist, i feel like the context for what people might work on a mix for has changed over time. i personally feel like I lost touch with the care and interest of working on mixes as they take time and care and they are such an intimate snapshot of you as a DJ which can be a lot of pressure.
at a time when I personally feel like community in dance music can feel fleeting, the curation can feel strategic, the algorithm isn't built for artists (or DJs for that matter), but for influencers + selling things - i think this has led to most people i know, including myself, feeling generally burnt out from being online. maybe this is unfounded, but i do feel like the mix series did once inspire some level of community.
I’ve been thinking about creating a curated mix series for a long time - i imagined one that would showcase DJs from around the world, familiar and unfamiliar, varying in levels of experience and range of sound. My goal for this mix series is to serve as a platform for some DJs I see around the world that are really talented, but also a space for listeners to simply find some new music & artists. maybe some familiar faces too. I wanted to host it somewhere that was somewhat like a blog format, inspired by many of the ones I have listened to in the past (and still do).
Each mix will have a little Q&A between the dj and I, and this site will host all of that - hopefully a place to frame everything together better (also im a tumblr kid at heart so bring back blogs lol). special thank you to Karim for the lovely artwork :)
Since I’m doing the first mix, and it would be weird to do a Q&A with myself, here’s some lil bits you might want to know about the mix:
I recorded this mix in my studio with 2 cdjs, 2 technics & a xone 92 mixer. It is mostly a vinyl mix which is a first for one of mine online.
The songs range from old finds to new ones, but favourites nonetheless.
It was road-tested with some friends at an afterparty. Maybe not the best place to test these things since no ones listening critically but like lol really who cares?!?
I think you should listen to it wherever you like, with friends or alone, but i picture it as something quite light and fun and spring time since its pretty housey & dreamy at times… so a long drive with someone cute, or early in the morning with some of your favourite people could be a good time to try it
A highlight is k-hand in this mix, which i’ve been playing out a lot again recently. RIP!
